This week, the EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference
is held in Córdoba, Spain. » Conference Homepage

At this conference, scientists from TU Delft’s ATMOS group will give a presentation on the “Comparison of two distinct EarthCARE Multi Spectral Imager simulators” and on the “Evaluation of SEVIRI retrieved liquid water cloud properties for monitoring of the first indirect aerosol effect”.

EUMETSAT, the “European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites”, provides weather and climate-related satellite data to national meteorological services.

Scientists from TU Delft’s ATMOS group have devised a novel method to estimate the differential backscatter phase and the differential propagation phase from polarimetric weather radar measurements.

These differential phases do not suffer of attenuation and they do not depend on the absolute radar calibration. Therefore, this method opens amazing new horizons for meteorological radar polarimetry such as:

  • rain rate estimation and raindrop-size distribution estimation without the need of an absolute radar calibration,
  • operational absolute radar calibration by precipitation measurements,
  • attenuation correction including the estimation of wet radome attenuation,
  • and more …

The method will be presented for the first time at the European Conference on Radar in Meteorology and Hydrology which takes place in Sibiu, Romania, the 6th – 10th of September 2010. » Conference Homepage
